But some had raised fears that animated adverts could distract drivers negotiating the tricky Five Ways Edgbaston roundabout.Coun Peter Douglas Osborn (Con, Weoley) said: “When you are coming around Five Ways there can be considerable difficulty knowing which lane you should be in.”I have seen an accident there already. I feel this is a further distraction and a danger to the hd led display public.”But the committee was told that, since the static advert was installed, there had been no accidents at the location.A transport department official said: “Due to the location of the advert clear from the highway on top of the shopping centre, it is visible from a distance to drivers approaching and using Five Ways roundabout.”Councillors were also told that an increasing number of roadside billboards were springing up all over the country, including one further along Broad Street, with no evidence of an impact on road safety.The committee voted by eight to four in favour of planning permission for the next two years, by which time a major redevelopment of the Five Ways Shopping Centre and conversion of Auchinleck House office block into a hotel is expected to be under way indoor led display.
